Montreal proves it again in Champions league and a change in coverage at a local paper…

Just two days after defeating the Seattle Sounders in the USL First Division quarterfinals with a 90th minute goal, the Montreal Impact solidified their place atop their CONCACAF Champion’s League group with a difficult 2-1 win against CD Olimpia in Honduras.   The win, combined with a draw by the Puerto Rico Islanders kept the USL representatives in the competition undefeated.

Meanwhile, the Major League Soccer teams in the competition are still without a win and struggling to advance past the group phase of the tournament.  The league Commissioner Don Garber announced this week that the failure of MLS teams to win a match in the Champion’s League will not be enough to get the league to change its business model, but perhaps when MLS fans start to get the notion that the USL may be putting out a better product will be?

On the Seattle Soccer Show yesterday, Matt Gaschk announced that he will not be covering the 2009 Sounders FC team for the paper.  Gaschk started covering the Sounders in 2004 and has been replaced going into 2009 by former Seattle Supersonics beat writer Gary Washburn.
